Girl Killed by Accident by Her Five-Year-Old Brother

A two year old girl was killed Tuesday afternoon in Burkesville, Kentucky in a tragic accident after her (five-year-old) brother shot her with a Cricket .22-caliber rifle he had received for his birthday. Their parents apparently thought the gun had been unloaded, but it turned out there was one round left. The gun was designed for use by children, and was supposed to be a training weapon.

While I’m sure that some people could use this incident in the gun-control laws debate, I think this was more of a parenting issue than anything else. No sane person would allow a five-year-old to be left unsupervised with a weapon, loaded or not. And I find it kind of ridiculous that the adults were unable to do a simple action such as unloading the weapon. Maybe they should be checked for a mental disorder that would allow them to act this way. And while I can understand a kid taking a martial arts class at a safe location with trained (and mentally capable) supervisors, I don’t get how the parents thought that getting their kid a gun would in any way benefit them. If they were in fact mentally retarded and unable to defend themselves, they should have recruited someone other than their five-year-old as their bodyguard.

The whole situation is horrible for anyone involved, especially the girl, but what I think is maybe even worse is that the kid will live with this for the rest of his life because of his parents.

Smallest Movie Made With Atoms!

The Animation Commendation

The extremely smart people of IBM have created what the Guinness Book of World Records verifies as the smallest movie ever made! I don’t mean small as in, low-budget, but physically small! The film, “A Boy and his Atom” is made from…ATOMS! This stop-motion animated film was made using carbon atoms and moved around with a scanning tunneling microscope! I love it and think it’s super cool! What do you all think?

FBI “Looks” Into Boston Bombing

After one of the suspects was killed and the other captured after a manhunt, the FBI is looking into possible motives for the attacks. In particular, they are concerned with the six-month trip that the older (now dead) brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, supposedly took to Russia in 2012, and there is some speculation that he used this time to contact ‘terrorist’ groups in Chechnya. Meanwhile, ‘Suspect 2’, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s condition is improving at the Beth Israel hospital, where he is being held for questioning by the FBI.

Let me start out by saying that in no way am I a conspiracy theorist… But for me, none of the facts in this case add up. I think that this is an FBI set-up, because:

1) None of the “evidence” that would give solid evidence that the brothers really did take part in the bombing has been released to the public. Where is the video that shows the suspects placing their backpacks on the ground? Where is the weaponry of mass destruction the suspects supposedly carried with them? How does the public know that Dzhokhar’s “confession” was really made? He’s surrounded by the FBI. And most importantly, how is it that the timing of the bomb blasts occurred at the very moment that a drill was taking place? There isn’t really proof that the brothers weren’t involved, but I’m assuming the FBI had a role, too.

2) There is a picture showing the arrest of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in which he has NO bullet wounds, and is being HANDCUFFED by an officer. How, then was he run over by his brother, without any injury to the officers/agents that were undoubtedly surrounding him? He didn’t die of gunshot wounds, apparently…

3) The FBI was keeping tabs on the older brother, Tamerlan. I really don’t think that after having him on their radar, that he’d be able to make bombs/grenades without them noticing.

4) Lastly, this case could have a lot of benefit for the FBI in the future… Threats to national security are perfect ways for the federal government to gain more power without feeling the wrath of its freedom-loving citizens.

Yeah, so that’s my take. I know how much some people hate conspiracy theorists, but this situation has too many missing pieces, and since when was the FBI the model of an honest organization with morals?

The US Warns over N. Korea Missile Launch

The US Secretary of State John Kerry said that a missile attack on the US, attempted or successful, would be a huge mistake on N. Korea’s part. During his visit to Seoul, Kerry also downplayed suggestions that N. Korea has nuclear warheads even capable of reaching, let alone harming the US. The Secretary of State plans on urging leaders in China to use their influence on N. Korea to rein in on Kim Jong-un’s aggression.

I think that everyone is taking Kim Jong-un’s threats way to seriously. Estimates of N.Korea’s nuclear capabilities have shown that even if N. Korea reached its maximum missile range (which is highly unlikely), its nuclear weapons would only be able to reach part of Alaska… Also, considering the amount of debt the US owes to China, it’s not likely that China would allow N. Korea (its ally) to risk starting a war with the US. My thoughts are that Kim Jong-un is simply trying to make a name for himself after taking office.

Colorado Introduces New Gun Laws

After the (somewhat) recent elementary school shooting, activists are pushing for tighter restrictions on weapons of mass destruction, especially guns. President Obama even assigned the VP with the task of organizing legislation. Finally, on state- Colorado- has decided to be the first to introduce new laws to decrease chances of further violence. Their new laws include smaller sizes of ammunition magazine and more background checks for gun buyers.

Personally, I’m happy that Colorado has been able to place restrictions without actually banning the guns themselves. Making buying a gun harder will likely deter any serial killers, who will probably give up the risks of having a background and check and instead resort to other (less dangerous weapons). Banning guns themselves isn’t really logical because some people just feel safer with a weapon, or they collect guns etc…

Out This Friday: Oz the Great and Powerful

Coming out this Friday is none other than none other than Disney’s own version of the popular classic “The Wizard of Oz”. Instead of focusing the story on the main character of Dorothy, Disney instead has decided to follow the life of another well-known (although mysterious) character- the Wizard of Oz. Three witches, and Oz’s companions, a winged monkey named Finley, and China Girl (a girl made out of glass) are also features in this remade version.

A lot of critics have opposed changing key elements of the original, but I’ve really liked Disney’s “remakes” in the past (‘Tangled’ was great, so was ‘The Princess and the Frog’), and I think the idea of introducing a character who mostly everyone ignores to the public is really creative. The summary, as seen on the official Disney website reads:

“Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he’s hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking. That all changes, however, when he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.”

One of the reasons I love Disney is because they aren’t afraid to step out of line when coming up with new ideas for movies. Besides, I think it’s more enjoyable to watch something that has a storyline you aren’t completely familiar with.

Bullying- A Major Issue Today

Bullying is a really big problem today in schools all around the world, and its effects linger with both the bully and his/her victims throughout their lives. It’s also an issue portrayed in our popular culture (when’s the last time you saw a movie that didn’t have one of the main characters facing problems from another character?), and I think it’s really horrible that people choose to harm other people physically and mentally, but I know that there’s no way to realistically prevent people from having the tendency to bully. However, in order to minimize bullying, we can:

1) Educate people about bullying: Let ‘aspiring’ bullies know that picking on people isn’t “cool”, and enable people to stand up for victims of bullying.

2) Have responsible adults supervising classrooms (ie: I think it’s ridiculous when a kid is obviously getting bullied and the teacher/bus driver/etc completely ignores the situation… I mean, are they afraid of a bunch of elementary schoolers??)

3) Have counseling readily available to both bullies and their victims, to get the bullies to leave their habits and find another outlet for their management issues, and to aid victims in rebuilding their lives.

4) …And finally, rearrange the school boards’ disciplinary systems so that bullies actually face consequences… For example, make any bullying behavior required to be shown on college applications.
